These bites were a hit with my family; I’ll be sure to make a bigger batch next time.
1. Slice the onions into 1/4-inch thick rings and separate them.
2. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
3. In another bowl, whisk together the egg and milk.
4. Dip each onion ring into the flour mixture, then into the egg mixture, and finally coat with breadcrumbs.
5. Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).
6. Fry the onion rings in batches for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown.
7. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.
8. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
Variations & Tips
For a spicier kick, add a teaspoon of cayenne pepper to the flour mixture. If you have gluten-sensitive family members, try using gluten-free flour and breadcrumbs. You can also experiment with different seasonings like garlic powder or paprika for added flavor. For a healthier version, bake the onion rings in the oven at 425°F (220°C) for about 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through.
